St Gerald
Saint Gerald
December 5, 2007
Gerald was born in Northumbria, England, and became a monk at Lindisfarne. When Celtic liturgical practices were forbidden there, he left England and entered a monastery on the island of Inishbofin off the coast of Mayo, Ireland. When the English and Irish monks there quarreled, he built a monastery for the English monks on the mainland. He succeeded St. Colman as abbot.
In the latter half of the 11th century, Bernard, the Archbishop of Toledo, was delegated by the Pope to bring about an ecclesiastical reform in Spain. He called in various French clerics and monks, among whom was St. Gerald, Abbott of Moissac, who was appointed choir director of the Cathedral of Toledo.
So well did this saintly man fulfill his duties and so much did he influence the people for good, that when the See of Braga became vacant, Gerald was selected by the clergy and people of that city to be their bishop. Gerald visited his diocese eradicating the abuses that had cropped up, especially that of the administering of ecclesiastical investiture by laymen.
Lessons
Although St. Gerald was a comparatively young man, he proved a wise ruler and governed Mayo until 697, when, it is said, he resigned in favor of St. Adamnan. Some authors hold that St. Adamnan celebrated the Roman Easter at Mayo, in 703, and then went to Skreen, in Hy Fiachrach, and that after his departure the monks prevailed on St. Gerald to resume the abbacy. The Saxon saint continued to govern the Abbey and Diocese of Mayo till his death.
Prayer
Heavenly Father, we thank you for St. Gerald and his example, not only to those of his own day but to us in this present time. We ask that St. Gerald, along with all our brethren in heaven and the angelic hosts, watch over us and pray for us that we may live according to Your will. Amen.

Nancy Update
Last Saturday after working, then cleaning the house, went to see Pop at his house. I went childless. We had a nice evening and went to Damons for dinner. In the morning we went to Lady of the Fields for 9:30am mass, to breakfast at the new diner, then to Homestead Gardens and Mimi;s grave. We stopped at Mr Kranzlers grave and he had 5 stones there. We said prayers for both.
This weekend Nick is home. The house was filled with boys last night. He said when he went to the Penn State football game last week the girls volleyball team were announce at half time and senior girls came on the field. They are a champion team and Dede's daughter - our cousin, Kara Callahan is on the team and she came out. Nick said she was very pretty. As did all his buddies. One guy a little older said she is the best one on the team. She does anything to get the ball returned over the net. Kara is on facebook. I told him she knows you go there - that alond and being a cousin is a great introduction.

St. Margaret
St. Margaret Mary Alacoque
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
October 15, 2007
The visions of Christ granted to St. Margaret Mary Alacoque (virgin and religious) led to the Church's formal veneration of the Sacred Heart of Jesus.
Margaret Mary was born in 1647; her childhood in eastern France was unhappy because of family problems and illness. After briefly considering marriage, she entered the Order of Visitation Sisters at the age of twenty-four. She was considered a simple and undistinguished nun. She was humble and patient and open to criticism and correction, but her superiors considered her clumsy and somewhat slow.
Though Margaret Mary had difficulty meditating in the formal way expected of the sisters in her order, on December 27, 1674, Margaret Mary experienced an apparition of Christ. Jesus showed her His Sacred Heart — a symbol of His often rejected love for humanity — and asked her to promote devotion to His Sacred Heart through frequent Communion and an hour of prayer each Thursday night (in memory of His agony in Gethsemane).
Christ appeared to Margaret Mary on four separate occasions. When others learned of her visions of Christ, they accused her of delusions or deliberate fraud. However, her Jesuit confessor, St. Claude de la Colombière, believed, supported and encouraged her.
Margaret Mary died in 1690. Her gentleness and patience convinced many people of the genuineness of the apparitions. The Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus was eventually established in 1856.

Great win yesterday!
Who decides who gets to be in the S in the stands? It was cool last time I watched it was all white except for the blue S.
Did the couple in the altercation with JoePa know it was him? Are they in the PSU community?

Special Treat at the Shrine
I attend Mass on Thursdays at the Shrine and been lucky the last couple of times to get the Rector as the Celebrant--today the Mass (special Mass for the beginning of the school year at CUA) was celebrated by the soon to be Cardinal Wuerl. I also received Communion from his as well--so special treat for me.
Plus Shrine cafeteria only charged me $3.80 for my hot meal (staff rate--and of course I brought this to the cashiers attention) for lunch after Mass.

Jack's birthday venue change?
Sent: Wednesday, August 29, 2007 11:19 AM
Subject: What's Up Scheid Family!!!: Happy Birthday JACK
We are thinking, just thinking of a possible change in venue for Saturday and will give it a quick green light if good for all.
Jack's buddy brendan suggested we have Jack's birthday at Beef's. Jack loved the idea.
If easier for all then it is good for us as well.
A couple of Jack's buddies are away for long weekend (they also get off on Friday--I thought I just got rid of them?) so makes it easier for us to transport.

Jack at Jackson's Birthday Celebration
Toured the camp with the kids in the golf cart--crazy and bumpy ride.
Then allowed each to drive in a big square--Jack was the fastest and craziest driver. He drove in a circle at full speed--I thought cart would tip over. Other riders were all yelling 'Jack!!!!' But he didnt care he just drove on with a smirk.

Rainy night in Westminster, Maryland. Busy Friday night with the all night party but everyone had a good time. Needed lots of rest on Saturday + CrissB slept from 1pm to 8pm on Saturday. I got her up by saying HSM 2 is on again.
Getting Nick ready for college. He had to get a meningoccal vaccine shot(ouch). Tomorrow going out with Sam Rager and his Mom to discuss roommate stuff. Nick will be leaving Friday morning for Penn State. Mark and Brittany will be taking him.
My financial institution is going great. Very busy handling lots of cash and paperwork. Should be on the board by Christmas. Yes we get Labor Day, Columbus Day and Veterans Day off.
Hope to see everyone at Jackson's 5th birthday party.
