I am embarrassed you didnt know this history

I've sent out info from time to time as well

I have more in depth history and keep track of this stuff as well

I wonder if Uncle Rob just had his keyboard on caps lock or was yelling

Anyway--I have been watching this series as well and it is excellent. I pride myself on history especially WWII and there is so much I had no idea and love hearing about the social impact/ lifestyle at the time back here at home. I guess I had a little more of a romantic viewpoint of WWII but this series has brought it into current day. I can see guys today fighting in WWII.

Special treat on Monday--Erik and I golfed with Paul Shelby (80 yrs old) drafted into the Navy and saw action on all the hot spots. His ship was hit by a 500 lb bomb/ Kamikaze which took out a 1/4 on board. I suppose shortly we will lose much of our living history from WWII.

Sorry to embarass you.

Mom told me that Pop stormed the beaches of Normandy but was injured by schrapnel on the beach. he was transported to Paris where he stayed for 45 days.

Now I know....the rest of the story.

He did fight in France vs the Germans--some famous battles

He was actually stationed for a while at Camp Meade.

Uncle Al saw action in the Pacific during WWII

Pop was born in like 1898--which would make him some 43 years old when US got involved in WWII or some 46 on 6/6/44

As for Mom's stories which she always stuck by--I continue to search for the facts to back all of her stories. I was telling some to Pop (our father) and he said he never heard of some of them? Grandparents kidnapped/ Protestant eloping with Catholic maid/ rich relatives in County Donegal/ relative sitting on stoop in Philly watching troops return from Civil War/ Grandfather running an Irish tavern and running guns for IRA/ Grandfather murdered about a week before she was born and Pop going out looking for guys and getting in a fight (another episode where Pop lost an eye-he must have had many eyes or tough eyes) and was in jail when Mom was born.

I have this stuff on hard copies--probably should be jotting it all down somewhere

Ken Burns does good work and the show does a great job with the greatest generation. It's amazing how much we don't know about these great Americans. In class last year, we studied in depth the U.S. military from the Revolutionary War to current GWOT. Pop Dowd's WWI was simply a huge muddy, bloody ordeal. The US didn't get into WWI until late in the game. The battle of the Marne was as nasty as they come. Soldiers just scared out of their minds trying to fight a trained and seasoned enemy. Command and control was difficult and perhaps a reason Pop's status was unknown on the battlefield for a short time...a cardinal sin in today's Army. "Never leave a fallen comrade" is a must. The US and Pop won the Battle of the Marne and helped turn the tide. The lineage of one of our greatest Army divisions...the 3rd Infantry Division/Ft. Stewart, GA...dates back to WWI and their unit patch/motto is "Rock of the Marne". During my trip last month at Ft Stewart, I was able to visit their Medal of Honor parade field and pay respect to their fallen heroes. The 3rd ID is currently in Iraq for their third deployment since 911. It is clearly one of our best Army units and their legendary lineage continues...WWI/WWII/Korea/Vietnam/Desert Storm/OEF/OIF.

Just my two cents...pick up a book or two from the library on American Military History and enjoy.
