Sharon Scheidhauer, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, said that last year almost 1.1 million immigrants became naturalized citizens, after passing required history and English proficiency tests.
American citizenship is the gold standard for many folks who once lived under dictatorships or restrictive political systems, she said.
"They're amazing, extremely appreciative to this country and the freedoms we have," Scheidhauer said of those becoming citizens. "They are thankful for the opportunities in education and the economy. They don't take it for granted."
